Gathering Prayer: (Do this prayer repeat-after-me style)
Dear Jesus, we thank you for time to feed our faith as a family, and time to learn about Jesus’ walk with his disciples. Help our time together to be holy time. In your name we pray, Amen.
Bible Story: Luke 24:13-35
Read the Emmaus Walk from Luke 24 from a children’s Bible, your own family Bible, or you can find an easy-to-read version here:
Discuss as a family:
Did the disciples know who Jesus was at first? When did they recognize him? Once they recognized him, what did Jesus do? What did the disciples do? What would you have done if you got to walk with Jesus?
What did Jesus talk to the disciples about? What would you do if you got to learn about God from Jesus?
Song: I Want Jesus to Walk with Me
This is a song that I often sing with children during Lent, which is the journeying time of the church year. I thought it fit quite well with our story for the day, and it has a great beat to sing as you walk!
Activity: Walk for Charity
Jesus walked with his disciples, and sometimes we are called to walk, too! In the area in which we live, there are tons of charity walks and runs throughout the spring and summer. You can look in the newspaper or online to find events in your area; just make sure that they are kid-friendly before you sign-up. If there aren’t any, or none of them seem to fit into your family’s schedule, you can make your own walk or run. Decide what day you will go, how far, and for which charity. Then, do it, and make a family donation to that charity. I know they will appreciate your thoughtfulness and creativity!
My oldest daughter and I participated in a 2 mile walk to help the local domestic violence shelter. I explained to her that there are some mommies and kids that are in danger and need some place safe to live, and we were going to walk to help them, just like Jesus walked to help his disciples. She did a wonderful job, and we got to spend come great God Time together on a Saturday morning. Here is a pic of her proudly displaying her walker number:
Thanks for your commitment to faithfully feed your family’s faith! I hope that this time was holy time for you.
Closing Prayer: (Can be a repeat after me prayer if you have non-readers in your family)
Dear God, we thank you that for holy time together as a family. Help us to remember that you always walk with us, no matter where we go. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
