A Voice in the Night: Samuel is Called by God

Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening!

Gathering Prayer: (Do this prayer repeat-after-me style)
Dear Jesus, we thank you for time to feed our faith as a family, and time to learn about Samuel.  Help our time together to be holy time.  In your name we pray, Amen.

Bible Story:  1 Samuel 3
One of my favorite stories in the Bible is the calling of Samuel.  The Bible App for Kids has a great version of the story, so that’s what we shared for our Bible story this week.  You can get your own free copy of The Bible App for Kids here:  https://www.bible.com/kids

If you do not have access to this app, you can read the story of God’s call to Samuel in 1 Samuel 3 here:

Discuss as a family:
Who was Eli?  What did Samuel do for Eli?  What did Samuel hear in the night?  What did he think it was at first?  What did Eli finally tell him to do?  What did the voice tell him to do?  Did he accept this calling?  How?  How do you think God is calling in this world?  What is God calling you to do or to be?

Song:  Here I Am Lord
This song is actually a hymn that comes directly from this story in the Bible, as well as other the call stories of other Biblical prophets.  It has a lot of words, so you might just want to work on the chorus, and have a dance party during the verses.  Enjoy!

Activity:  Samuel Hide-and-Seek
For our activity this week, we did a version of hide-and-seek.  One person remained in the room and the rest of us all went into a different room together and hid there.  When we were ready, we called out the name of the seeker, just like God did to Samuel.  When the seeker arrived in the room we were in, following our voices, they said “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”  Then we all popped out of our hiding places.  We repeated this until each family member had a turn.  It was really fun for both me and the kids, and helped to reinforce the point of the day.

Thanks for your commitment to faithfully feed your family’s faith!  I hope that this time was holy time for you.

Closing Prayer: (Do this prayer repeat-after-me style)
Dear Jesus, we thank you that you call us to be your hands and feet in the world.  Help us to hear your call and obey.  In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
