Ruth from      What’s in the Bible

Gathering Prayer: (Do this prayer repeat-after-me style)
Dear Jesus, we thank you for time to feed our faith as a family, and time to learn about Ruth and Naomi.  Help our time together to be holy time.  In your name we pray, Amen.

Bible Story:  Ruth
Last week in church, we talked about the great cloud of witnesses.  One of the questions that I asked during worship was “What people in the Bible are a part of your great clod of witnesses?”  For me, one of the answers to that question is Ruth.  She was a faithful sister to Naomi, her mother-in-law, following her back to Israel even though she was a foreigner.

My favorite passage in the book of Ruth is when Ruth pledges her faithfulness to Naomi in Ruth 1:16-17.  You can find it here:  https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ruth+1%3A16-17&version=NRSV

For our Bible exploration time, we turned to Jelly Telly’s Five Minute Devotions on Ruth and Naomi.  Here is the video from this free resource:

Discuss as a family:
What do you think about Ruth’s promise to Naomi?  In what ways does she teach us to be faithful?  What are some ways that you can also live the example of Ruth in your own life?  What do you think about God’s faithfulness?  How does God show faithfulness to you?

Song:  Where You Go I Will Go
This song is from Faith Inkubators, and is part of a project to learn important verses of scripture by heart.  This video includes the song and signing:

Activity:  Follow the Leader
In order to feel what it would be like to lead like Naomi or follow like Ruth, we played a few rounds of “Follow the Leader.”  Each person in our family got to lead the line, doing whatever crazy things they could think up, and the rest of us faithfully followed.  While we played, we sang the refrain “Following the Leader” from Peter Pan.  If you don’t know this song, this would be a good time to reinforce the song for the week again.  Our kids thought it was great, and wanted to keep playing.  No pics this week; we were having too much fun!

Thanks for your commitment to faithfully feed your family’s faith!  I hope that this time was holy time for you.

Closing Prayer: (Do this prayer repeat-after-me style)
Dear Jesus, we thank you for your servant Ruth, who teaches us to be Faithful.  Help us to be faithful wherever you lead us.  In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
