Daily Devos: Come, Holy Spirit

When the day of Pentecost had come, [the apostles] were all together in one place. 2And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

  • Why do you think that the Holy Spirit comes in wind, fire, and language?  How do you experience the Holy Spirit?  What is the Spirit stirring up in you?

Holy Spirit, Breath of Life, breathe the fire of your love into us.  Shape us, give us life, make us whole.  Help us to spread the love of Christ to the ends of the earth.  In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Come, Holy Spirit: Acts 2:1-12

Gathering Prayer: (Do this prayer repeat-after-me style)
Dear Jesus, we thank you for time to feed our faith as a family, and time to learn about how the Holy Spirit came to the disciples.  Help our time together to be holy time.  In your name we pray, Amen.

Bible Story:  Acts 2:1-12
Look up this story in a children’s Bible, your own Bible, or you can access and Easy to Read version here:  https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts+2%3A1-12&version=ERV

Discuss as a family:
What would it have been like to feel a rushing wind inside the house, with no doors or windows open?  Would it have gotten your attention?  What would it have been like to see flames coming out of the heads of your friends?  Your own heads?  Would you have been amazed that it didn’t hurt you?  What would it have been like to be able to speak another language but not understand it?  To hear a language that you know spoken by someone that you knew didn’t know that language?  What about this story of the coming of the Holy Spirit will most stick with you?

Song:  Holy Spirit Song
This is a song that I wrote last year to sing with the children of my church during the children’s message.  The video below includes both the words and actions.  Enjoy!

Activity:  Holy Spirit Streamers
This week, I only had time to go to the Dollar Store, so our streamers are a little more low-tech than other ones that I saw on Pinterest.  However, they workd well, were easily repairable if my kids got a little too feisty, and sounded like the rush of a violent wind and a snapping fire.

You will need:
one package of red crepe paper
enough plastic rulers for each member of your family (I got red ones with slits in the center for 50 cents each)
a scissor
tape (if you don’t have slits in your rulers)

Each streamer should be about as tall as the child to whom it belongs.  Any longer, and they will have trouble waving it.  Any shorter, and it won’t be fun.  Cut the crepe paper to the right size, with enough extra to tie a knot.  Thread the crepe paper through the slit in the ruler and tie a square knot (not too tight, or the crepe paper will rip).  Have fun! (If you don’t have a slit in your ruler, fold the end of the crepe paper around one end of the ruler and secure with tape.)

Here are a couple of pics of the completed project:

Thanks for your commitment to faithfully feed your family’s faith!  I hope that this time was holy time for you.

Closing Prayer: (Can be a repeat after me prayer if you have non-readers in your family)
Dear God, we thank you that for holy time together as a family.  Help us to remember that your Holy Spirit is always with us.  In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
